Farallones de Cali Backcountry Access
Colombia's wettest 4x4 challenge
This gnarly route climbs from Cali’s outskirts into the Farallones, where Pacific moisture dumps constant rain on cloud forests thick enough to hide your truck ten feet away. The old logging roads beyond Pichindé village turn into boulder-strewn creek beds that require constant momentum and prayer, while the track to Pico de Loro involves stream crossings that can go from ankle-deep to hood-high in an afternoon thunderstorm. Above the cloud line, the páramo opens up into rolling grasslands with views to both the Pacific and the Cauca Valley.
Expert-level technical driving with mandatory lockers, winch, and full recovery kit. The region gets 200+ inches of rain annually, making this a muddy, slippery proposition most of the year. Dry season (December-February) offers the only reasonable window, but expect mud regardless. Park permits required for the upper sections, and local guides recommended for navigation through unmarked forest tracks. What makes it worthwhile is reaching Colombia’s least-visited high country, with camping spots in páramo meadows and wildlife encounters that include spectacled bears and mountain tapirs.
