Lençóis Maranhenses Backcountry Circuit
Brazil's Sahara with swimming pools and shifting sands
The Lençóis Maranhenses sprawl across 1,500 square kilometers of pristine white sand dunes that fill with crystal-clear rainwater lagoons between January and September, creating Brazil’s most otherworldly landscape. This backcountry circuit follows rough tracks and beach routes from Barreirinhas through Atins, Caburé, and back via the Rio Preguiças, requiring careful navigation through shifting sands and tidal flats where GPS becomes useless and local knowledge is everything.
This is challenging sand driving that demands deflated tires, recovery boards, and a winch for the deep stuff. High tide blocks some coastal sections, so timing matters as much as technique. Best visited April-July when lagoons are full but access roads aren’t completely flooded. Stock 4WD with good sand tires can handle most of it, but you’ll earn every kilometer fighting through loose sand that swallows overconfident drivers whole.
