Serra da Bocaina Backroad Network
Colonial gold road through Atlantic Forest peaks
The cobblestone Estrada Real once carried gold from Minas Gerais to Paraty’s port, and remnants of this colonial highway still wind through the Serra da Bocaina’s cloud forests. Today’s network of dirt roads and abandoned pavement connects the highlands between São José do Barreiro and Cunha, passing through fazendas that have grown coffee since the 1800s. The route climbs to 1,800 meters at Pedra da Mina, where Atlantic Forest gives way to high-altitude grasslands and the views stretch from São Paulo’s coast to Rio’s mountains.
Difficult in wet conditions (December-March) when clay turns to grease and fog reduces visibility to meters. The old stone sections demand careful tire placement—locals still use ox carts on some stretches. Any 4WD handles dry season, but wet season requires experienced drivers and good tires. No permits needed, but respect private property and fazenda gates. Fuel and supplies in São José do Barreiro or Cunha; nothing reliable between. Camping possible at designated areas in Bocaina National Park with advance permission. You’re driving through living history, where the Atlantic Forest still clings to mountains that once fed an empire.
