Valle de la Luna Backcountry Circuit
Mars-like terrain through razor-sharp salt canyons
The unmarked tracks through Valle de la Luna twist between razor-sharp salt formations and wind-carved canyons that look like they belong on another planet, just 13 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama. This technical circuit requires navigation skills to follow the faint tire tracks between the famous Three Marias rock formations and the hidden amphitheater viewpoints that most tourists never see. The salt-encrusted surfaces hide deep holes and sharp edges that will shred tires without warning, while GPS signals bounce off the canyon walls.
Difficult technical driving demands experienced 4WD operators with rock sliders, skid plates, and at least two spare tires. The jagged salt formations and hidden washouts catch overconfident drivers regularly. Best tackled in early morning or late afternoon when temperatures drop below furnace levels – summer midday heat hits 120°F in the canyons. Park entry fee required, but backcountry camping prohibited inside the reserve. Navigate by waypoint, carry GPS backup, and expect to crawl in first gear over terrain that makes the moon look smooth.
