Signal Mountain Road
Steep technical climb to desert summit towers.
Signal Mountain Road climbs 3,000 vertical feet in just 4.5 miles to reach the communication towers that crown this Sonoran Desert peak east of Tucson. The route follows a service road built in the 1960s that demands precise throttle control on steep grades exceeding 20 percent. Loose rock and off-camber sections near the summit require careful line choice, while the final push to 4,877 feet offers commanding views across the entire Tucson basin.
This is a difficult trail requiring experienced drivers and vehicles with low-range gearing, good brakes, and preferably a manual transmission. Rock protection recommended for undercarriage. Open year-round but summer temperatures can exceed 110°F in the desert below. No permits required but this is within Saguaro National Park East boundaries. The payoff justifies the pucker factor: 360-degree views spanning four mountain ranges and the sprawling Sonoran Desert ecosystem.
