Ruta del Tungurahua Volcano Access Road

Monitor an active volcano from the danger zone

Difficult

Tungurahua’s been spitting ash and molten rock since 1999, but this access road still climbs through the evacuation zone to reach the Instituto Geofísico’s monitoring stations at 4,200 meters — when the mountain’s behaving. The track starts as gravel through potato fields around Baños, then turns to loose volcanic sand that’ll bog down anything without momentum, especially after the sharp left at Refugio Nicolás Martínez where the gradient hits 25 percent and tire pressure becomes everything.

Difficult due to altitude, loose surface, and the small matter of an active volcano that could resume erupting any time — IGEPN monitoring is mandatory before attempting. High-clearance 4WD with sand tires recommended, plus emergency communications since cell service cuts out above Pondoa. Dry season offers the best window (June-September), but weather changes fast at altitude. The reward is standing where volcanologists monitor one of South America’s most active peaks, with views across the Avenue of Volcanoes that’ll remind you why Ecuador earned its nickname.
