Johnson Valley to Barstow
Classic Mojave crossing for desert veterans
This 80-mile desert crossing connects Johnson Valley’s open playground to Barstow through some of the Mojave’s most desolate country. You’ll thread through ancient lake beds, abandoned mine sites, and endless networks of sandy washes where the only tracks might be your own. The route passes through Soggy Dry Lake and skirts the edge of Marine Corps training areas, offering glimpses of tank tracks and ordnance warnings that remind you this is serious backcountry.
Stock high-clearance 4WD handles most sections, but deep sand pockets and rocky climbs demand experience reading terrain. Winter through early spring offers the best conditions—summer heat can kill. Carry extra water, fuel for 200+ miles, and GPS with offline maps since cell service vanishes past Lucerne Valley. It’s not technically difficult, but the remoteness and navigation challenges separate casual drivers from desert veterans who understand that out here, self-reliance isn’t optional.
