Iona National Park Coastal Route

Angola's pristine Namib coast meets the Atlantic

Expert

The Iona Coastal Route cuts through Angola’s largest national park along 200 kilometers of pristine Atlantic coastline where the Namib Desert meets the sea in spectacular fashion. Starting from Tombua (formerly Porto Alexandre), the track winds through towering sand dunes, salt pans, and rugged coastal cliffs that rival Namibia’s Skeleton Coast but see a fraction of the traffic. The route passes through Foz do Cunene at the mouth of the Cunene River, where desert elephants and oryx still roam despite decades of conflict that left the park largely inaccessible.

This is expert-level expedition territory requiring self-sufficient preparation, satellite communication, and preferably convoy travel. The sandy tracks demand aired-down tires and recovery gear, while fuel must be carried from Lubango or Namibe as supplies are non-existent in the park. Best attempted April through September during the dry season, though permits and guides are essential given ongoing demining efforts. What you get is one of Africa’s last untouched wildernesses, where you might drive for days seeing only desert elephants and endless dunes meeting the ocean.
