Flint Hills Discovery Route
Last intact tallgrass prairie overland experience
The Flint Hills Discovery Route threads through 200 miles of unbroken tallgrass prairie on century-old ranch roads and section lines between Cassoday and Council Grove. You’ll cross Spring Creek at least six times on limestone slabs, navigate around century-old stone fence posts, and climb Chase County’s highest ridges where you can see uninterrupted grassland to every horizon. The route connects working cattle ranches, abandoned homesteads, and the historic Z Bar Ranch headquarters.
This moderate route requires high-clearance 4WD for creek crossings and muddy sections after rain. Spring through early summer offers the best wildflower displays but also the wettest conditions. Carry plenty of water and fuel — services are 50+ miles apart. The payoff is experiencing the last 4% of original tallgrass prairie in North America, exactly as it looked when the first settlers arrived. Private land sections require permission, available through the Nature Conservancy.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle the Flint Hills Discovery Route?
Yes, a stock Wrangler with high clearance will do fine on this route. The dirt two-tracks are moderate difficulty with some rocky limestone sections, but nothing requiring lockers or extreme modifications.
Is the trail accessible during winter months?
Winter access is not recommended due to muddy conditions and potential snow/ice on the limestone sections. Best conditions are April through October when the prairie is dry and temperatures are manageable.
Do I need permits to drive through the Flint Hills Discovery Route?
Yes, permits are required since portions cross private ranch land managed by The Nature Conservancy. Contact them in advance to arrange access and understand current restrictions.
What's the most challenging part of this 180-mile route?
Water crossings during spring rains and navigating limestone outcrops can be tricky. The route isn't technically difficult, but finding the correct two-tracks through unmarked prairie sections requires good navigation skills.
How far can I go between fuel stops on this route?
Plan for 200+ mile range as gas stations are sparse in the Flint Hills. Council Grove is your best bet for fuel, and you'll want to top off before starting since the 180-mile route plus detours can push your range.
