Chinle Wash to Canyon de Chelly
Sacred Navajo canyon country and ancient ruins
Chinle Wash cuts through the heart of Navajo country, following ancient waterways toward the dramatic sandstone walls of Canyon de Chelly. This 18-mile route traces seasonal stream beds and traditional Navajo roads across high desert terrain, passing hogans, sheep camps, and petroglyphs sites that have been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years. The wash crossing at Many Farms can be impassable during flash floods, and the final approach to White House Ruins requires navigating deep sand and rock steps.
Moderate difficulty with high-clearance 4WD required for sand sections and rocky washes. Permits are mandatory through Navajo Nation Parks, and hiring a Navajo guide is required for vehicle access beyond the rim drives. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, avoiding summer flash flood season and winter snow. Limited cell service throughout. What you experience is sacred landscape largely unchanged since ancestral Puebloan times, world-class rock art, and cultural immersion few visitors ever see.
