Ward Mountain — Ely Basin and Range Highpoint Viewpoint

Stand up here and you get the whole picture — the Snake Range to the east with Wheeler Peak punching skyward, the broad White River Valley to the west, and the thin grey ribbon of US-50 threading the basin floor below. Ward Mountain is the dominant high ground south of Ely and the backdrop to the entire stretch of trail running out of town. The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest wraps the upper flanks, and the Ward Mountain Recreation Area sits at the base — a legit staging zone for anyone running the basin country. No crowds, no entrance fee, no nonsense.

Access is via Ward Mountain Road off US-6/50 southeast of Ely. The lower approach is paved; upper forest roads are graded dirt suitable for high-clearance rigs. Snow can linger on the upper slopes into May. Signals drop to spotty above the treeline. If you’re heading west toward Eureka, this is your last real elevation reference point before the flats swallow you.
