This unmarked trailhead sits at the end of Waipi’o Valley Road, where most tourists turn around after seeing the black sand beach. The Muliwai Trail continues north along the coast, climbing over ridges and dropping into stream valleys. It’s a serious trek — 9 miles of muddy switchbacks, multiple stream crossings, and loose rock sections.
Park near the beach area in Waipi’o Valley, but don’t block local access roads. The trail isn’t signed and requires serious preparation: water purification, rain gear, and sturdy boots. Stream levels can change quickly with weather. Most hikers camp overnight in Waimanu Valley, which requires permits through the Division of Forestry.
