Wadi Bani Awf — Balad Sayt Wadi Bed Wild Camping
Wadi Bani Awf is one of the best-known 4×4 drives in the Western Hajar. The route climbs from the Al Hamra side through the terraced village of Balad Sayt, then drops through a tight, steep canyon system toward the Rustaq side. Overlanders camp on the gravel benches and flat stretches beside the wadi, with jagged limestone walls on both sides and seasonal pools nearby. There are no marked sites, no facilities and no fire rings. Bring everything you need, including water, and carry all your trash out.
Don’t camp in the wadi bed itself if there’s any rain in the forecast. Flash floods in the Hajar can arrive from storms many kilometres upstream under clear skies. Pick a bench well above the channel. Keep clear of village date groves and water channels (aflaj), which are working irrigation, and camp discreetly out of sight of homes. The track past Balad Sayt is steep, loose and rocky in places, so a proper 4×4 with low range is the sensible choice. Cell signal drops in and out. Conditions change after floods, so check locally in Al Hamra before you commit. Have a dirty day.
