Vulcan Mine Road Petroglyphs

Point of Interest

Ancient petroglyphs cover dark volcanic rock faces along this remote desert corridor, with dozens of panels featuring geometric designs, animal figures, and abstract symbols. The rock art spans centuries of Native American presence in the area, etched into the dark patina of desert varnish. Most panels are within easy walking distance of the rough track, though some require scrambling up rocky slopes for better views.

Vulcan Mine Road branches north from the Mojave Road near Essex and requires high-clearance 4WD for the rougher sections. The petroglyphs are scattered along several miles of the route with no formal markers — you’ll need to watch for dark rock outcrops and pull off to explore on foot. Respect the cultural sites by observing only, never touching or climbing on the rock art.
