Virunga Mountains — Volcanoes National Park Ridgeline Viewpoint

The Virunga chain punches eight volcanoes above 3,000 metres along a tectonic border that looks like it was drawn by geologic argument. From the ridgeline above Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda you get a clear sightline across the Albertine Rift — forested calderas, mist hanging in the saddles, and on a clear morning the cones of Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira smoking quietly in the DRC. It’s as raw and alive as Africa gets.

Access from Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri) is straightforward on tarmac, but the park boundary tracks are muddy clay — slippery in wet season (March–May, October–November). The park is strictly managed; no free access, permits required for gorilla trekking. Even without gorilla permits, the ridgeline drive and surrounding highland scenery justify the detour. Verify border security conditions on the DRC side before approaching closely.
