Vinson Massif Base Camp Ellsworth Mountains

Vinson Massif is the highest point on the Antarctic continent at 16,050 feet, anchoring the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains in West Antarctica. Base camp sits on the Branscomb Glacier at roughly 7,000 feet and serves as the staging ground for guided summit attempts. Even if you’re not climbing, the scale of this place is staggering — crevassed glaciers, ice walls, and absolute silence at the bottom of the world. The Ellsworth range is one of the few places on the continent that feels genuinely alpine rather than just polar ice.

Access is exclusively via ski-equipped aircraft from Punta Arenas, Chile, through Union Glacier Camp operated by ALE (Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions). No independent access. Operations run November through January only. Extremely expensive, logistically complex, and weather-dependent. ALE manages all permitted activity in this region of West Antarctica.
