Valldal Valley — Norddalsfjord Upper Riverside Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

The Valldal River cuts a broad, braided course through this glacially carved valley before draining into Norddalsfjord. Along the upper reaches of the valley, flat gravel and grass terraces sit back from the river bank — well-used by overlanders threading the classic Trollstigen–Geiranger loop. It’s raw, exposed country with big views toward the peaks. Expect wind off the fjord, no facilities, and nobody to bother you outside peak July–August. Fire restrictions apply in dry periods — Norway’s allemannsretten (right to roam) permits camping here as long as you’re 150m from any dwelling and stay no more than two nights in one spot.

Access is via RV 63 / county roads out of Valldal village. Passenger cars with clearance manage the valley roads fine; nothing technical required. Fill water in Valldal town before heading up. Nearest fuel is Valldal. Cell coverage is spotty at best once you’re up the valley. Snow possible at either end of the season — May and October can surprise you.

River flat halfway to Geiranger.
