Ubari Oasis Camp — Idehan Ubari Lake District Basecamp
Ubari town sits at the northern gateway to the Idehan Ubari erg and the string of saline lakes — Mandara, Umm al-Maa, Gebraoun — that make this stretch of the Fezzan one of the most otherworldly drives in North Africa. The established camp here is a simple, flat, sand-packed site with basic shelters used historically by tour groups and self-sufficient overlanders doing the Ubari-to-Germa piste. Expect nothing modern: no showers, no hookups, no trash service. You bring everything in and pack everything out. Fires are possible but fuel is scarce — bring your own gas and a full water supply before arriving.
Access from Ubari town is straightforward on the main road south before cutting into the erg. A 4WD is mandatory once you leave the tarmac — soft sand can swallow a rig fast in this terrain. The political situation in Libya changes frequently; verify conditions with an experienced fixer and current consular advisories before committing to any route through Fezzan.
