Tanezrouft Basin — Bordj Mokhtar Approach Reg Flat Dispersed Camp
This is the real Sahara. The Tanezrouft is one of the most desolate stretches on the continent — a vast, nearly featureless hamada and reg plain where overlanders running the Reggane-to-Bordj Mokhtar corridor pull off and camp on the gravel flats. No facilities, no shade, no water, no signs. You pick a flat spot well clear of the piste, hammer your pegs in loose gravel, and watch the stars detonate overhead. Wind can be brutal and sand movement constant — weight your kit down before you sleep. Capacity is effectively unlimited but you rarely share the desert with anyone.
Access is the piste itself — soft sand sections appear near Bordj Mokhtar, but the central corridor is firm reg. Fuel is critical: Reggane is your last reliable fill north, Bordj Mokhtar to the south. A southern zone permit from Algerian authorities is mandatory. Travel in convoy; solo vehicles are genuinely dangerous here. Best window is November through February — summer temperatures are lethal.
The empty quarter — gravel, stars, and nothing else.
