Sayan Mountains Mineral Spring
This reliable mineral spring bubbles from fractured granite about halfway along the main Oka River mining access road, marked by decades of prospector camps and a weathered wooden sign in Russian. The water has a distinct metallic taste from the mineral content but tests clean and flows year-round even in harsh Siberian winters. Local miners have built a simple wooden collection box to direct the flow, and there’s enough flat ground for 3-4 vehicles to camp nearby.
Access requires following the main mining road south from the Irkutsk-Nizhneudinsk highway — it’s rough but manageable for high-clearance vehicles in summer. Spring floods can make the final approach sketchy until June, and winter access requires serious cold-weather preparation.
