Sanae IV South African Antarctic Base

SANAE IV (South African National Antarctic Expedition) is bolted to the Vesleskarvet nunatak at roughly 850 meters elevation in Dronning Maud Land, about 170 km from the ice shelf edge. The station is a three-module elevated structure designed to stay above drifting snow — a necessity given the katabatic winds that regularly rip through this part of the continent. It runs year-round with a small winter-over crew and a larger summer complement, supporting atmospheric, geophysical, and biological research.

Resupply comes via the SA Agulhas II icebreaker from Cape Town, making this one of the more isolated stations on the continent — no inland traverse network connects it easily to the Pole. Logistics for any access go through the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP). Fuel, comms, and basic medical support on-site for program personnel only. No public access whatsoever.
