Rollins Pass

This windswept saddle on the Continental Divide offers commanding views in all directions and serves as a fascinating glimpse into Colorado’s railroad history. The original rail line that crossed here was known as the ‘Moffat Road,’ and you can still see scattered railroad ties and grade remnants. At 11,676 feet, weather can turn quickly with afternoon thunderstorms common in summer. Multiple 4WD routes converge here, making it a natural waypoint for high country exploration.

Access from the east via East Portal Road requires 4WD and good ground clearance, while the western approach from Winter Park is equally challenging. The pass is typically accessible June through October, though early season travel may encounter snow patches. No facilities here—just spectacular alpine scenery and a sense of standing where history was made. Strong winds are common, so secure loose gear.
