Río Magdalena Sacred Fish Viewing Platform

The Magdalena River’s confluence with Río Sogamoso creates deep pools where massive schools of bocachico and dorado congregate during spawning season. Local Zenú communities built this simple wooden platform in 2019 to share their ancestral fishing knowledge with visitors while maintaining sustainable harvest practices. The viewing area overlooks a natural amphitheater where fish populations can reach extraordinary density during peak migration months of March and April.

Access involves a 2-kilometer walk along the riverbank from the village of El Banco. Water levels fluctuate dramatically between wet and dry seasons, affecting fish visibility. The platform itself is basic — no facilities, just weathered planks and a thatched roof for shade. Best viewing happens at dawn and dusk when fishing activity peaks.
