Recta del Tin Tin — Ruler-Straight Gravel Stretch Through the Cardón Cactus Forest
After you top out on the Cuesta del Obispo and drop past Piedra del Molino, the road changes character. The switchbacks end and Ruta Provincial 33 lays out one of the straightest gravel lines in the Argentine northwest, running across the high Tin Tin plain inside Parque Nacional Los Cardones. Cardón cactus stand on both sides like a crowd of old men, some of them taller than your rig. Snow-streaked peaks sit on the horizon, and on a clear day you can see a long way down the road.
The surface is ripio (gravel) and can be washboarded, but it’s usually easy going. The real risks are wind and sun, plus loose gravel that tempts you to drive too fast. There’s no shade, no services and no reliable signal out here, so top off fuel and water in Cachi or Salta beforehand. Stop at pullouts only. Cardón grows slowly, and they hold the whole place together, so don’t drive off the road to get a photo. Dry season (roughly April to November) is the safe window. Summer storms can wash out sections, so ask locally before you commit. Verify current road conditions and park rules ahead of time.
Have a dirty day.
