This trailhead sits at 9,600 feet in the Santa Fe National Forest, providing access to multiple wilderness trails including routes toward Santa Fe Baldy and Lake Katherine. The parking area accommodates about 15 vehicles with vault toilets but no water. Dense aspen and spruce forest surrounds the area, and several dispersed camping spots exist within a mile along the access road.
The final 3 miles of Forest Road 102 require high-clearance and can be rough after storms. Snow typically closes access from November through May, and afternoon thunderstorms are common during monsoon season. Popular with day hikers but less crowded than lower elevation trailheads.
