Parque Nacional Natural El Tuparro Camping Maipures
Primitive camping along the banks of the mighty Orinoco River at one of South America’s most spectacular natural phenomena. The Maipures Rapids stretch for kilometers as the river thunders through a maze of granite islands and rocky channels. Basic facilities include pit toilets and designated fire rings, but bring everything else — this is raw wilderness camping at its finest. The sound of rushing water dominates day and night.
Access requires high-clearance 4WD on rough dirt tracks through cattle country, especially challenging in wet season. Park entry fees apply and advance reservations recommended through the park office in Puerto Carreño. Best visited April through September when water levels expose more of the dramatic rock formations. No cell service and nearest supplies are hours away in Puerto Carreño.
