Pafuri Gate — Limpopo River Confluence and Fever Tree Forest Viewpoint
Pafuri is the northern entry point into Kruger National Park and the terminus anchor of any run through the Lebombo Mountains toward the Limpopo floodplain. The confluence of the Luvuvhu and Limpopo rivers here is one of the most biodiverse corners of southern Africa — thick fever tree forests, massive nyala populations, hippo pools, and some of the highest bird species counts in the park. The viewpoint above the floodplain at Lanner Gorge is worth every kilometer of dirt road it takes to reach it. Check in at the gate before pushing further north — rangers here can give you a real read on road conditions and wildlife movement on the floodplain tracks.
The road into Pafuri from Punda Maria is SANParks gravel — negotiable in a high-clearance 2WD in dry season, but the Luvuvhu River crossing can close access completely after heavy rains. Peak season for birding is September–November. No fuel at Pafuri Gate — carry reserves from Punda Maria or Phalaborwa.
Kruger's wild north — fever trees and two rivers.
