Ninety Mile Beach Dispersed Camping (Te Oneroa-a-Tōhē, Northland NZ)

Te Oneroa-a-Tōhē — Ninety Mile Beach — is a designated highway in Northland, New Zealand, where you legally drive on the hard-packed sand between Ahipara and Scott Point. Dispersed camping is practiced at the northern and southern access points and along the beach corridor, making it a genuine overland experience unlike anywhere else in the country. The beach is flanked by towering dunes to the east and open Tasman surf to the west. It’s raw, windswept, and beautifully minimal.

Tidal timing is critical — the beach can be impassable at high tide and during storms. Rental vehicles and standard car insurance are explicitly void on this beach; bring your own rig. The surface is firm sand at low tide but can soften quickly near freshwater streams crossing the beach. Freshwater access is limited — carry your own. Some areas hold cultural significance to Ngāti Kurī, Te Rarawa, and Ngāi Takoto — respect the land. Check local tide tables and weather before committing.
