Ngarkat Conservation Park Dispersed Camping

Ngarkat is a sprawling mallee wilderness on SA’s eastern fringe, and dispersed camping is permitted throughout the park on existing tracks and cleared areas. It’s dry, flat, and brutally remote — think orange sand two-tracks threading through dense mallee scrub, wedge-tailed eagles overhead, and nights so quiet you’ll hear yourself think. No facilities whatsoever. Bring everything including water. Fire restrictions apply seasonally and are strictly enforced in this fire-prone country.

Access via the Bordertown or Pinnaroo approach on largely unsealed roads — high-clearance recommended when tracks are soft after rain. The park has no entry stations and minimal signage inside. Grab the NPSSA park map before you leave pavement. Self-sufficiency is non-negotiable out here.
