Moyale Border Crossing — Kenya-Ethiopia Frontier Overland Gateway
Moyale sits right on the Kenya-Ethiopia border, the town literally straddling two countries with the Kenyan side on the south and the Ethiopian side on the north. After grinding through 500-plus kilometers of corrugated dirt, volcanic rock, and Chalbi sand from Isiolo, this is where the Northern Frontier road ends and the next chapter begins. The Kenyan side has fuel (petrol and diesel — verify availability, shortages happen), basic guesthouses, phone top-up shops, and a handful of dukas where you can restock before crossing. Immigration and customs are on the main road through town. Expect crowds, touts, and money changers — keep your cool and your paperwork tight.
The road into Moyale from Marsabit is rough; the last stretch deteriorates significantly in wet season. Cross early in the morning to minimize queues. The Ethiopian side of town has its own fuel and resupply options but currency matters — Ethiopian birr on that side, Kenyan shillings on this one. A4 map is not enough; have waypoints loaded before arrival.
End of the road. Start of Ethiopia.
