Marambio Station Argentine Year-Round Air Hub

Marambio sits on Seymour Island off the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and has been Argentina’s primary air gateway to the continent since 1969. The 1,200-meter gravel strip is one of very few runways in Antarctica capable of receiving wheeled aircraft in all seasons, which makes it a genuine resupply hub — fuel, food, personnel rotations, and emergency medevac all flow through here. The Argentine Air Force runs regular flights from Río Gallegos and Comodoro Rivadavia. There’s a meteorological station, hospital, and permanent infrastructure that supports the Argentine Antarctic Program’s broader network of bases.

Ushuaia is the closest civilian city, roughly 1,100 km north by air. Access for non-Argentine nationals requires coordination through the Argentine Antarctic Directorate (DNA). It’s the Antarctic Peninsula’s busiest airfield and a known emergency fallback for operations across the Weddell Sea sector.
