Makoshika State Park

Montana's largest state park featuring badlands, fossil beds, and hiking trails near Glendive.

This 11,531-acre park showcases classic badlands terrain with layered rock formations, fossil deposits, and scenic overlooks. The campground offers 16 sites with picnic tables and fire rings, plus vault toilets and drinking water. Sites accommodate RVs up to 45 feet, though the winding access road requires careful navigation with larger rigs.

The park entrance is just southeast of Glendive off I-94. Road conditions inside the park vary from paved to gravel, with some rough sections to remote viewpoints. Best visited April through October when temperatures are moderate and roads are most accessible.
