Mago National Park — Neri River Sand Flat Dispersed Camp
The Neri River drains the eastern fringe of Mago National Park, and when water levels drop between November and March, it leaves behind wide, firm sand flats that overlanders running the Omo Valley track have used as overnight stops for decades. Shade is minimal — acacia scrub and doum palms line the banks — but the flat ground is solid and the isolation is total. Buffalo, elephant, and Burchell’s zebra move through this corridor, so camp discipline matters: food secured, no wandering at night. Campfire is the norm here; no fire restrictions enforced in the field, but dead wood is scarce.
Access is via rough dirt track from Jinka heading south toward the Omo River, passable only in dry season — 4WD with good clearance is mandatory. No signage, no facilities, no cell signal. You’ll need to arrange an EWCA scout/ranger in Jinka before entering Mago; self-entry without a ranger is not permitted and can result in fines at checkpoints. Fuel and water must be carried from Jinka.
