Little Finland — Gold Butte Aztec Sandstone Hoodoo Garden

Point of Interest

Little Finland, sometimes called the Hobbit Hole, is a patch of Aztec sandstone that wind and water have chewed into fins, pockets, mushroom caps and small arches. Colors run from rust red to cream with swirled banding. It’s a walk-around spot, not a drive-through. Park, then wander on foot and watch where you step. The rock is fragile, the crust is alive, and Gold Butte is a National Monument, so pack out everything and stay off the delicate edges.

It sits off the Gold Butte Backcountry Byway, a short run from Whitney Pocket. The pavement ends out of Mesquite, and the last stretch is dirt with sandy wash sections that can bog a low or street-tired rig. Bring a shovel, traction boards and a way to air down. There’s no cell service, no water and no services out here, so carry all of it. Summer is brutal, so plan for fall through spring. Check current BLM road conditions before you go, because washouts and soft sand change after storms.

Have a dirty day.
