Litang Horse Festival Campground — G318 High Plateau Basecamp
Litang is the logical overnight stop on the high segment of the G318, and the town campground near the Tibetan hotel district is the most documented place to pitch. Elevation is brutal — just over 4,000m — so expect headaches if you’ve come straight from Kangding. The site is basic: flat ground, pit toilets, cold water taps, and a handful of Tibetan guesthouses within walking distance for a hot meal. Gets genuinely busy in late July and August when the annual horse festival runs, so arrive early or book a guesthouse courtyard overflow slot.
Access is straightforward — Litang is directly on G318, paved all the way. Season runs May through October; winter at this elevation closes roads and freezes everything solid. Cell service is patchy China Mobile. Fuel station in town is reliable and should be your top-up stop before pushing west toward Batang or east toward Xinduqiao.
G318's roof-of-the-world town stop at 4,000m.
