Lee Flat Joshua Tree Forest

Dispersed Camping

Lee Flat stretches across several miles of open desert floor dotted with the largest concentration of Joshua trees on earth. The trees here grow taller and denser than anywhere else in their range, some reaching 40 feet. Dispersed camping is allowed anywhere outside the research plots, with dozens of established fire rings scattered across the flat. The area sees moderate use from photographers and desert rats, but plenty of space to spread out.

Access via Racetrack Road from the north or via dirt tracks from Highway 190. High-clearance recommended for the rougher approach roads, though the flat itself is easy driving. No water, no facilities. Cell service spotty to none. Best visited October through April when temperatures are manageable.
