Lake Elgygytgyn Impact Crater Research Station
Scientific research station perched on the rim of Lake Elgygytgyn, a perfectly circular crater lake formed by meteorite impact. The station houses international drilling operations studying ancient climate records preserved in the lake’s sediments. Dramatic 360-degree views of the 18-kilometer crater rim and the deep blue lake below make this one of Russia’s most otherworldly destinations.
Access requires helicopter charter or extreme winter overland travel — no roads reach the crater. Station is active during summer research seasons, typically June through August. Visitors must coordinate with Russian scientific authorities well in advance, and weather can strand aircraft for days.
