Laguna de la Cocha Sacred Lake and Guamués Island
Laguna de la Cocha sits at 2,760 meters in the Nariño Andes, Colombia’s largest natural lake and a sacred site for the Inga people. The centerpiece is Guamués Island (La Corota), a floating island nature reserve accessible by traditional totora reed boats. Crystal-clear waters reflect páramo vegetation and distant volcanic peaks. Local Inga guides offer boat tours explaining traditional fishing methods and the lake’s spiritual significance.
Located 27km east of Pasto via paved road, then 2km of gravel to the main dock area. Several small restaurants and boat operators work from the shoreline. Morning visits offer the best weather and wildlife viewing. The lake can experience rapid weather changes typical of high-altitude environments — pack layers and rain gear.
