Kiger Gorge Overlook — Steens Mountain Glacial Trough Viewpoint
Kiger Gorge is the viewpoint on the Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway that makes people shut the engine off and just stand there. Ice carved this thing into a deep, textbook U-shaped trough, with the Kiger Creek drainage running down the middle and aspen and juniper patches in the folds. Late June and July bring wildflowers. By fall the aspens go gold and the light gets low and honest. Pull-out parking is limited, with a toilet at the lot (verify ahead; BLM facilities change). Tight on a summer weekend, but it turns over fast.
The loop road is gravel, washboarded in spots, and the high section usually doesn’t open until snow clears, often July, and it can close again with early storms. Check BLM Burns District for current status before you commit. Most dry-weather rigs manage it with decent tires and clearance. Carry water, because there’s none up here. Pair this stop with the East Rim Viewpoint just up the road, where the mountain drops thousands of feet to the Alvord Desert. Have a dirty day.
