Kakadu National Park Mardugal Campground

Established Campground

Mardugal Campground sits deep in Kakadu’s southern wilderness, accessible only via a challenging 4WD track through monsoon forest and wetlands. This primitive campground offers 6 designated sites with pit toilets but no water — bring everything you need for extended stays. The setting provides access to some of Kakadu’s most pristine wetland areas and lesser-visited Aboriginal rock art galleries. Crocodiles inhabit nearby waterways, and the area teems with birdlife during the Dry season.

Access requires high-clearance 4WD and river crossing experience — several creek crossings can run deep during the Wet. The 18-kilometer track from the nearest sealed road takes 1-2 hours each way and becomes impassable during heavy rains (typically December through March). Best visited during the Dry season (April-October) when tracks are firm and wildlife viewing is at its peak.
