Jebel Shams Resort — Canyon Rim Camp Above Wadi Ghul

Established Campground

Jebel Shams Resort sits up on the plateau above Al Hamra, close to the rim of Wadi Ghul, the canyon locals call Oman’s Grand Canyon. It’s a private, run-for-guests setup with tents and basic cabins, plus space for people with their own gear. For an overlander coming up from the wadi runs near Al Hamra and Balad Sayt, it’s the easy, legal option: a staffed site with toilets and a kitchen, and the plateau stars overhead. It’s also a good base for the Balcony Walk, which starts nearby.

Up at roughly 2,000 meters it gets properly cold at night in winter, and the wind doesn’t care about your awning. Summer is hot by plateau standards and the haze can kill the views. October through April is the sweet spot. The road up from Al Hamra is steep, with tight switchbacks and a lot of vertical, so take it slow on the brakes and check surface conditions with the resort before you go. Pricing, tent-pitch rules, and whether they’ll take self-contained vehicles change, so call ahead and verify.

Have a dirty day.
