Jebel Shams — Canyon Rim Wild Camping
Jebel Shams sits in Oman’s Western Hajar range, and its plateau edge looks down into Wadi Ghul canyon. The drop is well over a thousand meters. Overlanders camp wild on the open ground near the rim and the Balcony Walk start. There are no facilities and no water, so carry everything. Nights are cold at altitude, especially in winter, when temperatures can drop near freezing. The rim edges are unfenced and the cliffs are unforgiving, so keep a close eye on kids, dogs, and the wind. A few local guesthouse camps in the area offer basic facilities if you want them.
The road up from Al Hamra is steep and winding, with paved sections and a rougher gravel stretch near the top. Use 4WD and low range to be safe, and check brakes and cooling on the descent. Cool season, roughly October to April, is the best window. Summer is hot even up high. Wild camping is generally tolerated, but respect local villages and any private land. Verify current access and rules locally before you go.
