Ha Long Bay Karst Limestone Towers
This UNESCO World Heritage site features an otherworldly maze of limestone pillars, caves, and floating fishing villages spread across 600 square miles of the Gulf of Tonkin. The karst formations, some reaching 200 meters above sea level, were carved by 20 million years of tropical weathering and tidal action. Most overlanders access viewing points from the mainland at Bai Chay or take the coastal road to less crowded Cat Ba Island for elevated perspectives.
Weather can shift quickly here — early morning offers the clearest views and calmest seas for photography. The main tourist season runs March through May and September through November. Coastal roads can be busy with tour buses, but dawn and dusk provide quieter windows. Parking at official viewpoints fills fast during Vietnamese holidays.
