Gyantse Dzong — Fortress Citadel Overlooking the Pelkor Chode Valley

Point of Interest

Sitting on a rocky crag above the town of Gyantse, the Gyantse Dzong is the kind of landmark that stops you mid-drive and demands your attention. Built in the early 14th century, the fortress held off a British military expedition in 1904 — bullet holes in the walls are still visible. From the battlements you get an unobstructed panorama of the Nyang Chu river valley, the Pelkor Chode Monastery complex below, and the surrounding barley fields at roughly 13,000 feet. It’s a genuine piece of Tibetan history, not a reconstruction.

Access is straight off the Friendship Highway through Gyantse town — paved all the way. Fuel up here; Gyantse has petrol stations and is a logical mid-run stop between Shigatse and Phari. Altitude hits hard; give yourself time to move slowly on the stairs. Entry fee required; ticket office at the base. Permits — Tibet Travel Permit plus Gyantse Alien’s Travel Permit — must be in hand before arrival. No exceptions enforced.

14th-century fortress, bullet holes and all.
