Gull Rock — Turnagain Arm Coastal Bluff and Inlet Viewpoint

Gull Rock juts out over Turnagain Arm just west of Hope, offering one of the most raw, unscripted views in Southcentral Alaska. The inlet below is known for bore tides that can move at 10-plus mph — time it right and you’ll watch a wall of water sweep the mudflats. Beluga whales work the channels here seasonally. The bluff sits at the terminus of the Gull Rock Trail, a roughly 5-mile one-way route out of Hope. No guard rails, no crowds, no nonsense — just tide, spruce, and open arm.

The trail starts off the end of Hope Road and is hikeable from late May through October. Snow lingers in the trees well into spring. This is a legitimate boot-leather POI, not a drive-up overlook — park at the trailhead in Hope and walk in. The Arm’s tidal flats are deceptively dangerous; stay on the bluff, not the mud.
