Grand Ditch — Colorado River Headwaters Water Diversion Viewpoint

The Grand Ditch has been rerouting water from the Never Summer Mountains east to the Cache la Poudre drainage since the 1890s. From the road that runs alongside it, the scale is genuinely strange — a horizontal scar slicing across steep alpine terrain at roughly 10,175 feet, maintained to this day. For overlanders on the Bowen Gulch traverse, this is a natural stopping point to take in the engineering, the drainage views, and to orient yourself on the route. The Kawuneeche Valley and the infant Colorado River are visible below.

The road along the Grand Ditch is a legitimate 4WD route managed by Rocky Mountain National Park. A free permit is not always required for the road itself but the area is inside park boundaries — confirm current access rules with ROMO before your trip. No camping along the ditch. Road is typically open July through October depending on snowmelt.
