Freshwater Campground — Cooloola, Great Sandy National Park

Established Campground

Freshwater Campground sits in the coastal forest of the Cooloola section of Great Sandy National Park. You reach it by turning inland off Teewah Beach onto a soft, sandy track. It’s a proper QPWS-managed camp, so you get a designated site, basic facilities, and some shade from the trees. That’s a big upgrade over the open beach zones when the wind is howling or the sand is blasting in. It works well as a staging camp before or after the Double Island Point run.

You need a 4WD, and tyres dropped to sand pressures. The inland track is chewed up and corrugated, especially in dry spells and school holidays. You also need a valid vehicle access permit for the beach and a camping permit booked through QPWS ahead of time. Expect it busy over Easter and the school holidays. Check current fire rules, facilities, and tide times with Queensland Parks and Wildlife before you roll in, because they change.

Have a dirty day.
