Erta Ale — Active Lava Lake Viewpoint

Erta Ale is a 613m basalt shield volcano sitting inside the Afar Depression, one of the hottest and lowest places on the planet, and it holds one of the world’s only persistent lava lakes. Standing at the rim at night watching molten rock churn and spit is one of those experiences that rewires you. The heat radiating from the caldera is intense even at distance. This is not a casual detour — it’s an expedition-level objective that takes real planning.

Access is from Mekele or Semera via rough desert tracks requiring 4WD convoys and mandatory armed escort due to regional security concerns — this is a non-negotiable requirement enforced by local authorities. The trek to the summit is done at night to avoid heat. Best season is November through February. Arrange through a licensed Danakil tour operator; do not attempt independently.
