Erg du Ténéré — Fachi Oasis Approach Reg Flat Dispersed Camp
This is the Ténéré as advertised — flat, featureless, humbling. The reg here is hard-packed gravel fading into wind-ribbed sand, and you camp wherever the ground is level and sheltered enough from the harmattan. No facilities, no shade, no signage. Navigation is by GPS and desert experience; the piste is marked by old fuel drums and tyre tracks that can vanish after any windstorm. Camel caravans still move through this corridor toward Fachi and Bilma, and crossing one at dawn is the kind of moment that makes the whole run worth it.
Access from Agadez requires a military escort arranged through Niger’s Direction du Tourisme — non-negotiable and enforced. Fuel capacity for the full Agadez–Bilma run must be self-sufficient; there is no resupply between Agadez and Fachi. Travel October–March only. Summer heat is lethal. Confirm security conditions with local operators before departure — this region’s status changes.
