Erg Chebbi — Merzouga Sand Sea Viewpoint

Erg Chebbi is the real deal. A compact but brutal sand sea on the Algerian border southeast of Erfoud, its rust-orange dunes climb to around 150 metres and stretch roughly 28 kilometres south to north. At dawn and dusk the light here is genuinely unreal — photographers and overlanders both lose their minds. The nearby village of Merzouga is your launch point: fuel, basic supplies, and cheap accommodation all available.

Access from Erfoud via the N13 is paved almost to Merzouga. Beyond that, it’s soft sand and you need aired-down tyres and solid sand-driving skills — or a local guide. Sandstorms can kill visibility fast. Spring and autumn are ideal; mid-summer is punishing and temperatures push 45°C. The dunes are not protected, but Morocco enforces zones around the erg — check local guidance before attempting deep penetration.
